Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar & National Safety Awards presented for Performance Year 2009

Union Labour and Employment Minister Mallikarjun Kharge presented  the Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar and National Safety awards for the performance year 2009 at a function  in New Delhi.  For the performance year 2009, the total number of National Safety Awards were 123 (72 winners and 51 runners-up).

Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar

Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar (VRP) is awarded in recognition of outstanding suggestions given by a worker or group of workers and implemented by the management during the previous calendar year  (Performance year) that result in improvement in quality, productivity and working conditions such as safety, health and environmental conservations in the industrial undertakings where Suggestion Schemes are in operations.

The financial savings, due to adopted and implemented suggestions of the winning applications of the VRP in 2009 was 1082.85 crores recurring and 94.83 crores non-recurring in Indian currency and 21.73 crores recurring & 29.59 crores nonrecurring in Foreign Exchange.

VRP is awarded in the form of cash prize and a certificate of merit in three classes- Class A – 5 winners win Rs. 75000 each, Class B – Eight winners win Rs. 50000 each and Class C – 15 winners win Rs. 25000.

For 2009 performance, 28 puraskars Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar were shared by 117 winners.

National Safety Awards

The National Safety Awards is given in recognition of outstanding safety performance of industrial establishments, construction sites, ports and installations under AERB to stimulate and maintain the interests of both the management and the workers in accident prevention programmes.

For the performance year 2009, the total number of National Safety Awards were 123 (72 winners and 51 runners-up).
NSA are given under twelve schemes, out of which ten are meant for Factories/Construction sites/Installations under AERB and two are for Ports.  Under each award, a Shield and a Certificate of Merit is given to each of the Award Winners and Runners-up.  The establishments are classified in different schemes on the basis of working of highest man-hours.

The criteria for presentation of these awards is: Lowest average frequency rate over a period of three consecutive years ending in the Performance year as compared to the National Average for that group of industries; Accident Free year based on man-hours worked during the contest year.

How the awardees are selected

The Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar  (VRP), previously known as Shram Veer National Awards as well as the National Safety Awards (NSA) was instituted by the  Union Ministry of Labour and Employment in 1965.  The Awards Schemes are operated by the Technical Wing of the Ministry, namely, the Directorate General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI), Mumbai.

The applications for Viswakarma Rashtriya Puraskar (VRP) & National Safety Awards (NSA) from eligible applicants are invited every year.   For VRP, the management is required to send the application on behalf of the workers and for NSA the management directly applies for awards under each scheme. The applications received for VRP as well as NSA are then adjudged by a Tripartite Awards Committee constituted by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, comprising of representatives from Employers’ organizations, Employees’ Organisations and Central/State Governments.

Besides the Tripartite representation, experts in the Committee from renowned institutions, Universities and Industries in the field of Safety, Health, Environment, Productivity and Quality also judge the applications.

Former Illinois Governor Blagojevich was sentenced to 14 years Imprisonment on Corruption Charges

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison on 7 December 2011. He was arrested and charged with a wide-ranging corruption spree that included trying to auction off President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat.

Blagojevich, a onetime rising star in the Democratic Party whose public defense strategy included stints on reality TV, a media tour and a book.

He  was convicted over the course of two trials on 18 counts of corruption.

His crimes included lying to the FBI, attempting to shake down a children's hospital for campaign contributions and seeking to secure campaign funds, a cabinet post or an endowment for a new foundation in exchange for the Senate seat vacated by Obama.

Under federal guidelines, he is to serve 85% of his sentence, or around 12 years.

Recruitment by Indian IT Companies witnessed a Slowdown in August 2011

According to a survey conducted by recruitment tendering platform MyHiringClub.com, recruitment by Indian IT companies witnessed a slowdown in the month of August 2011 due to the crisis in the US and Europe region. However the survey mentioned the overall hiring mood in the country looked positive. The US accounts for almost 60% of the revenues of the $60-billion Indian IT industry. The data from the survey showed the strong impact of the US and Euro crisis in Indian IT sector hiring.

The survey conducted among 353 employers, including 127 employers from the IT and ITEs sectors mentioned that it would take 2-3 months for recruitment activities in the IT sector to gain momentum.

Hiring activity saw a 49% drop in the IT and ITeS sectors in August vis-a-vis July. In contrast, other industries such as FMCG, banking, telecom and automobiles saw 14% more recruitment in August, compared to July.
A city-wise analysis showed that most cities experienced a lull in hiring activity in the IT and ITes sectors in August 2011. The IT hub of Bangalore saw a 29 per cent decline in August 2011.

Among the metros, the Delhi/NCR region saw a 19 per cent drop in hiring in August compared to July 2011, while Chennai witnessed a fall of 15 per cent. Mumbai and Hyderabad saw a drop of 13 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively, in August 2011.

Eight Indian Companies featured in World's 500 Largest Companies compiled by Fortune Magazine

Eight Indian companies, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) featured in the list of the world's 500 largest companies compiled and released by Fortune magazine on 11 July 2011. The other Indian companies on the list are: SBI (282), BPCL (307), HPCL (354), Tata Steel (410), ONGC (413) and Tata Motors (442).

Indian Oil is at the 98th spot, up from 125th place last year. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries also improved its ranking from previous year's 175 to 134th position. Indian Oil raked in annual revenues of USD 68,837 million while that of Reliance Industries stood at USD 58,900 million.

In the latest ranking, except State Bank of India, all other entities have improved their positions. 
Tata Motors has made an entry into the list for the first time this year. The list also features Citigroup, ArcelorMittal, Pepsico and Motorola, led by people with Indian roots.

Out of the eight Indian companies in the list, five are state-run entities.

Fortune's global list of world's 500 largest companies for 2011, compiled on the basis of latest annual revenue figures, is topped by retail giant Wal-Mart Stores. The retailer had annual revenues of USD 421,849 million.

Wal-Mart Stores is followed by Royal Dutch Shell (USD 378,152 million) and Exxon Mobil (USD 354,674 million) at second and third positions, respectively.

The other companies in the top ten are as follows: BP (4), Sinopec Group (5), China National Petroleum (6), State Grid (7), Toyota Motor (8), Japan Post Holdings (9) and Chevron (10).

ONGC, Coal India, NMDC awarded by the Government for Best Performance

ONGC, Coal India (CIL) and NMDC were awarded by the government for best performance in different categories on 20 September. The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) Secretary, Bhaskar Chatterjee gaveaway the awards.

Best financial performance award in Maharatna and Navaratna category was given to ONGC. In Miniratna category, the best financial performance award award has been given to Goa Shipyard.

Good Corporate Governance award in Maharatna and Navaratna category was also given to ONGC. Good Corporate Governance award in Miniratna category, the same award was given to Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd. K Balachandan MD, CPCL received the award.

The company of the year award in Maharatna category was given to CIL. The same awards for the Navaratna category were given to NMDC and Oil India.

50 Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) listed on the stock exchanges as on 30 August 2011 contributed about 22 per cent of the total market capitalisation. The CPSE with the highest market capitalisation was Coal India at Rs 236,832 crore (BSE) and Rs 237243 crore (NSE) as on 31 August.

Russian Grandmaster Peter Svidler won the Chess World Cup held in Russia

Russian grandmaster Peter Svidler won the Chess World Cup title on 20 September after winning a four-game final against his compatriot Alexander Grischuk. Khanty-Mansiysk (Russia) an industrial town hosted over 120 world's greatest chess players from 40 countries who fought for the title.

Svidler is a six-time Russian champion and one of the highest-ranked players in the world. He defeated strong competitors like American Gata Kamsky and Urkainian Ruslan Ponomariov earlier in the competition. With the victory Svidler won a $96000 prize money and a ticket to the 2012 world championship matches.

Russia holds the No.1 spot on the World Chess Federation's top-10 list, followed by Ukraine.
